casa guamuchil was built on the site of ancient habitation. finely painted slipware shards were layered among oyster shells downslope. four or five large (broken) molcahetes were unearthed from the hillside. one small terra cotta object is a disc about 3" diameter divided into 13 segments with 28 holes around the perimeter. holes big enough to position a piece of twig in and move it forward each day of the lunar month. kind of a pre-columbian pocket calendar!! a very large sunken storage jar (nearly 3' deep and 2' across) was buried near the proposed building site. we tried to excavate it, but roots from the huge guamuchil tree had destroyed it. ahh, the guamuchil!! shade and sustenance in hard times. a member of the legume family (as are many large tropical trees), the guamuchil is the iguanas favorite home, and our tree has several residents.

today we surfed early, and la surfista caught a set wave her first day home. we surfed a couple of waves together, then shopped for fruits and vegetables and took a mid-day siesta. after the tide bottomed out we headed for la terrazola for some muy bueno margaritas. about 20 surfers were spread over 200 meters of reef, and nobody was making the whole wave. this guy was making longer sections than most. after the tide filled in a little I joined the fray while la surfista recovered from jet-lag with another margarita.

When my surfer girl and I fell in love with Mexico, we decided to play house and garden here. We bought an old ejido house 2 blocks from the beach and began to turn it into our first "surf shack" -- casita azulejos. Between us, la surfista and I had 6 young-adult kids, and we filled the casita with family and friends for 8 seasons.

there are any number of good reasons to spend a few weeks or months on the beaches of Mexico. escaping the harshness of an Oregon coast winter is one. surfing warmer waters with my surfista is another. playing house and garden in an exotic environment can be fun. drawing or painting outside (simply living outdoors) is a pleasure. our first house (casita azulejos) has a terrace and garden in front that is a few meters above the street. sitting on the terrace was a voyeurs paradise, as the whole neighborhood passed below, unaware we were watching and listening.
